Lawyers Rally Behind Kano Court of Appeal Ruling, Caution Against Criticism

A group of legal practitioners, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, has cautioned against further campaigns of calumny against the judiciary, particularly in response to the recent Kano Court of Appeal ruling on the March 2023 gubernatorial election. The lawyers warned individuals, including Farooq Kperogi, a Nigerian professor based in the United States, and other anti-democratic elements to refrain from tarnishing the judiciary’s reputation.

The lawyers commended the Appellate Court’s decision upholding the Kano state governorship petition tribunal’s verdict nullifying Abba Yusuf’s election. They praised the justices for their impartiality, independence, and strength in the face of intimidation.

In a statement by the group’s secretary, Barr. M.I Gardo, the lawyers emphasized the need for Nigerians to resist any attempt to ridicule the judiciary. They asserted that the justices of the Court of Appeal delivered a sound judgment in line with the law, despite diatribes from the NNPP and its supporters.

Gardo stated that Abba Kabiru Yusuf’s nomination as the NNPP candidate for the Kano State Governorship election was a clear breach of the constitution. The lawyers supported the deduction of 165,000 votes from the NNPP candidate by the Court of Appeal, citing the strength of the electoral act.

The group warned of the dangers posed by the NNPP and its subsidiary, the Kwankwasiyya group, to Nigeria’s young democracy. They urged the NNPP to sever ties with the movement, emphasizing the group’s adoption of violence, falsehood, and breaches of laws.

The lawyers pledged to defend the judiciary and urged justices not to succumb to blackmail but to dispense justice without fear. They called on security outfits to take notice of unguarded utterances against the bench and provide the needed security for uninterrupted justice dispensation in Nigeria.
