MTN subscribers who celebrated the apparent cancellation of their airtime or data loans might need to reconsider as the debt cancellation stemmed from a system error within MTN, as reported by LEADERSHIP.

Despite subscribers’ jubilation and appreciation on social media, assuming deliberate debt cancellation by the telecom operator, it has been revealed that the initial clearance was a result of an error in the MTN system.

For instance, a user named Ada shared on her WhatsApp status, “Debt has been paid. MTN debtors Check your account, MTN don clear una gbese.”

However, an MTN official clarified that subscribers are still liable for their debts. He stated, “Users would still be responsible for paying the ostensibly cleared bills even after MTN fixes the problem that caused the debts to vanish from their accounts.”

The disappearance of debts from subscribers’ accounts was due to a glitch, indicating that once MTN rectifies the error, subscribers will be required to repay the debts that were mistakenly erased.
