Benjamin Mendy Takes Legal Action Against Manchester City Over Withheld Wages Amid Legal Battle

The French defender faced serious allegations of sexual assault in 2020, with accusations of misconduct dating back further. Mendy vehemently denied these charges and was ultimately acquitted by the jury at Chester Crown Court earlier this year. However, Manchester City ceased paying his substantial £100,000-per-week salary in September 2021.

As reported by Sky Sports, Mendy has initiated a ‘multi-million pound claim’ against Manchester City, citing owed wages during the period when his trial was ongoing. This claim has been formally lodged with the Employment Tribunal.

Mendy, previously the Premier League’s most expensive defender following City’s £52 million acquisition from AS Monaco in 2017, had a contract with Manchester City running until June 2023. His claim seeks payment for the duration between September 2021 and the contract’s expiration.

The legal representation for Mendy, including prominent sports lawyer Nick De Marco KC, confirmed the claim, citing ‘unauthorised deductions from wages’ during the period in question. Discussions between Mendy’s team and Manchester City were ongoing, with an optimistic outlook for resolution, according to statements made by Mendy’s legal counsel.

Previously, Mendy’s accountant estimated the back pay to be ‘in the order of nine to 10 million pounds gross’.
