Ex-Chelsea Striker Timo Werner Eyed for a Return Amid Premier League Interest in January Switch

The prospect of a reunion with former club Chelsea looms for ex-Chelsea player Timo Werner, as Premier League clubs express interest in a potential January move. RB Leipzig’s recent announcement has sparked talks about Werner’s potential return to the Blues. The German international had showcased his prowess during his earlier spell at the Bundesliga club, consistently delivering with 28 goals in 34 league appearances.

Werner’s impressive performance had drawn attention from clubs like Liverpool and Chelsea, particularly due to his ability to disrupt defenses with his penetrating runs. Eventually, it was Chelsea who secured his services for £45 million in 2020.

Those qualities he had shown in Germany hadn’t been able to translate to the Premier League in the end, scoring just ten goals in the Premier League over two seasons. That was despite the fact he had still looked dangerous, but a mixture of confidence and close offside calls tarnished his time at Chelsea.

That’s when an offer came in from his former side, who took him back to the club for a fee worth roughly £25million. His first season back in the Bundesliga saw him almost match the tally he set in England, scoring nine goals in a season where he made 27 appearances.
“I had a very good first six months at Chelsea, which was what the supporters and club expected of me. I scored the goals and played good games,” Werner said in an interview with The Sun in early 2023. “When you come from the kind of success I had in Germany or with Chelsea — playing nearly every game in the first season, winning the Champions League in 2021, scoring in the semi-final against Real Madrid, making a lot of goals.
