The Jigawa State Police Command has apprehended a suspected car thief, Lawan Sabil, who stole a Honda vehicle from a car dealership in Bauchi State.
According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the suspect and two accomplices absconded with the vehicle during a test drive after posing as potential buyers.
The suspects had requested a test drive before making payment, but one of the sales attendants insisted on accompanying them. During the test drive, the suspected thieves pushed out the attendant and fled with the car.
On Sunday, September 17, 2023, a patrol team from B/Kudu Divisional Police Headquarters arrested Lawan Sabil, aged 35, of Gwarimpa Quarters in FCT Abuja, in possession of a white Honda motor vehicle without a registration number, strongly suspected to be stolen.
The statement from the police read, “All efforts to stop the vehicle proved abortive when the patrol men sighted the vehicle at a high speed from a far distance, as the driver was very anxious and refused to slow down. While trying to evade the police, he collided with a cyclist in his path, causing the vehicle to come to a halt. The suspect then fled on foot but was later apprehended and taken to the station. The cyclist was rushed to the hospital, treated, and discharged.”
The incident was initially reported in neighboring Bauchi State, where three individuals had posed as potential buyers at S Fawa Motors along Murtala Muhammad Way. They requested a test drive, expelled one of the sales attendants on the way, and escaped with the car.
The rightful owner of the vehicle, Usman Zubairu, aged 40, from Federal Locust Bauchi, has since come forward.
The Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Police Command, CP Effiom Emmanuel Ekot, has directed the case to be transferred to SCID Dutse for a thorough investigation. Once the investigation is completed, the suspect(s) will be brought to court to face legal consequences.
