The Congolese government has unequivocally refuted claims of a coup attempt against President Denis Nguesso, who has held the reins of power for an extended 38-year period.
“URGENT – Misleading information is circulating, indicating significant events occurring in #Brazzaville,” tweeted Thierry Moungalla, Congo’s Minister of Information, via his official handle.
“The government vehemently rejects these baseless rumors. We assure the public of the prevailing tranquility and urge everyone to continue their daily activities peacefully.”
The reports of a military coup in Congo surfaced on Sunday, September 17, alongside unverified accounts suggesting that the military was assuming control of critical facilities while the president was attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Denis Nguesso, aged 78, has presided over the nation in Central Africa for an extended period, serving as president from 1979 to 1992. He returned to power in 1997 following a civil war and has remained in office ever since.
Coup attempts are becoming more frequent in various African nations, with recent incidents occurring in Gabon and Niger.
