Tony Cascarino has suggested that Liverpool should make a move to sign Ivan Toney after the Brentford striker’s recent display at Anfield for the Bees.
Writing for the Times, the former Republic of Ireland striker lauded the 27-year-old’s performance against Liverpool on Saturday despite Toney failing to score in a 1-0 defeat for Brentford, with Cascarino impressed with the striker’s qualities away from finishing.
The England international assisted Bryan Mbuema for what would be a disallowed goal, and although Toney failed to add to his incredible 20-goal Premier League tally for the season, Cascarino suggested that Liverpool should make a move for the Brentford man this summer.
Cascarino said: “I cannot believe Ivan Toney’s improvement technically over the past 18 months. He was one of the best players at Anfield. The Brentford striker has added all sorts of deft touches to his game, such as the clever pass that assisted Bryan Mbeumo’s disallowed goal.
“He has a finesse which, dare I say it, echoes that of Dennis Bergkamp. Toney’s subtlety complements his stature and finishing. Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United should all consider a move.”
Toney would be perfect for Liverpool had Nunez not been signed
Toney’s stock is hitting new heights this summer after an incredible season from the England international, one that has been largely overlooked due to Brentford’s lack of media attention as well as Erling Haaland’s record-breaking year, and for Liverpool, the 27-year-old could have been perfect had they not signed Darwin Nunez.
The Uruguay international joined last summer and has enjoyed a moderately successful first year at Anfield, and whilst there’s nothing stopping Liverpool from signing Toney this summer, it would be a waste of limited funds for most supporters given how little work is needed in the forward position.
