The police on Tuesday arraigned a 40-year-old woman, Esther Akinsanya, in Kaduna for alleged N3.6 million land fraud.
The defendant, who is facing a count charge of obtaining money under false pretences, however, pleaded not guilty.
Akinsanya pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel.
The prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant, sometime in 2021, obtained N3.6 million from Jemimah Luka under false pretences of buying three plots of land for her.
He said that the defendant promised to buy three plots of land at Maraba Rido, Kaduna for Luka, the complainant, a representation she knew to be false.
Leo said: “The complainant said that when she did not get any feedback, she became worried and called the defendant several times on phone but got no response
“The complainant said that when she eventually reached the defendant on phone, she decided to ask for a refund, but the defendant failed to make a refund.”
The prosecutor said that the alleged offence contravened Section 285 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
Emmanuel granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the defendant and reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
He added that both sureties must show evidence of tax payment to Kaduna State Government, and adjourned the case until October 5 for hearing.
