The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar on Saturday met with the governorship candidates of the party.
G9ija had earlier reported that Atiku and his running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa met with the candidate at the residence of the former vice president in Abuja.
Atiku while speaking on the aim of the meeting noted that he met with the candidates to strategise on how to defeat the opposition parties in 2023.
The governorship candidates of the party in attendance at the meeting include Kaduna, Plateau, Katsina, Lagos, Niger, Kano, Sokoto, Delta, Yobe, Jigawa, Nasarawa, Kwara, Benue, Borno, Ebonyi and Zamfara states.
Atiku is trying to put the party in place ahead of the 2023 general elections, with a crisis between him and the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.
There is also an issue between the Rivers State Governor and the party National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.
Ayu who described people calling for his removal from office as children insisted that he would remain in office.
Governor Wike in his reaction to Ayu’s comment called him an ingrate who was brought to become the party Chairman.
The camp of Governor Wike had called for Ayu’s removal following the emergence of Atiku as the presidential candidate, who is also from the North.
Meanwhile, a source at Atiku’s meeting with the governorship candidates disclosed that the former vice president assured them that there is no cause for alarm in the party.
The source who spoke with Leadership said Atiku stated that the main opposition party is on course to win the 2023 elections.
The source further stated, “He understands the impact the recent misunderstanding within the party has had among party leaders and so he decided to hold this meeting as a way of rallying the party to victory.”
