President Muhammadu Buhari has thrown his weight behind the presidential ambition of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
President Buhari spoke on the issue when he was asked by news outlet, Bloomberg, who he will want to succeed him.
Recall that a day before its primaries, the National Chairman of the APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, had announced the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, as the consensus candidate of the party and President Buhari.
Adamu, who spoke at the national secretariat of the party, said he had the backing of the President to make the announcement.
However, within a few minutes, Buhari, who was at the time holding a meeting with Governors elected on the platform of his party from the North, issued a counter statement, saying he had no preferred candidate.
With the backing of the Northern Governors, Tinubu emerged as the APC candidate at its primaries on June 8, 2022, defeating not only Lawan but also the former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), who came second and third respectively.
Lawan was a distant fourth.
When asked by Bloomberg who he will back as his successor in 2023, Buhari replied: “Yes. I will endorse the APC candidate for president.”
