A Professor of Computer Science, Adio Taofiki Akinwale, has urged the Federal Government to encourage the development of indigenous software applications through industries, companies and tertiary institutions.

He said this would promote homemade software applications across the country.

Akinwale gave the advice while delivering the 68th inaugural lecture of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB)

In a lecture, titled: Bigger and Better Database for Innovative Advancement in Industrial Revolution, the scholar stressed the need for urgent harmonisation of all databases in the country.

Such databases, he said, include those of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), National Identity Management System (NIM), Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Nigeria Banking System (BVN), Nigeria Telecommunication Operator, and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)

Akinwale emphasised the importance of using data to plan for economic and national planning growth, adding that the introduction of biometric into the National Identification Management System could serve as a central database management system for the nation.

He maintained that such could play broader roles in driving the socio-economic development and security of the nation.

Prof. Akinwale, who doubles as the Dean, College of Physical Sciences (COLPHYS) FUNAAB, said for specialised Universities like FUNAAB, there should be a unique Department of Agricultural Informatics, that would combine experts’ knowledge from both agricultural and science domains, in order to bring research benefits to the communities.

He commended the Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, Prof. Felix Kolawole Salako for giving him the opportunity to present the 68th Inaugural Lecture and more importantly for his exemplary leadership which according to him has added positive value to the peace and development of the University.

Prof. Salako described the inaugural lecturer as an accomplished scholar whose contributions to the mandate of the university were immeasurable.  He hailed the workers and students of his department and college for supporting the efforts of the Dean towards delivering the lecture.
