The Civil liberties Organisation (CLO), on Thursday, mourned the gruesome murder of Dr Chike Akunyili, widower of the late Prof. Dora Akunyili, by yet-to-be identified gunmen in Anambra.
“With Chike’s gruesome murder, we are saying enough is enough over barbaric killings of South-East residents under cold blood,” the Chairman of CLO in Anambra, Mr Vincent Ezekwueme, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu.
NAN recalls that Chike was killed in Nkpor, near Onitsha in Anambra on Tuesday, while returning after a posthumous award bestowed on his late wife, an erstwhile minister of information.
It was also gathered that five other people were also killed in the attack.
“Brutal and barbaric killing of Dr Chike Akunyili, a renowned humanitarian medical doctor is insensate, horrendous, detestable and a hallmark of man’s inhumanity to man.
“CLO is shocked, dumbfounded and devastated over the unfortunate and gruesome murder of Dr Akunyili.
“We must respect the sanctity and sacredness of human life, which is a gift from God,” he said.
Ezekwueme, however, prayed for the eternal repose of Akunyili’s soul.
“We pray God to give Akunyili family, Agulu community, Anaocha Local Government of Anambra and all those pained by his death the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable and irreparable lost,” he added.
