Sen. Eze Ajoku was on Tuesday re-elected the President of the Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria (COSROPIN).
The re-election took place at the coalition’s first General Assembly meeting in Abuja.
Ajoku, in his inaugural speech, pledged to continue to make the coalition the mouth piece of older people in the country.
The coalition boss assured senior citizens of better days ahead, saying alleviation of poverty and quality healthcare for older people were imperative.
He lauded the effort of the coalition in bringing to the fore the affairs of senior citizens in Nigeria.
Ajoku, who recalled the formation of the coalition as an amalgamation of 12 organisations, said Graceful Ageing Foundation (GRAF) was the pivotal body.
“ A series of meetings were held after the GRAF event, COSROPIN was adopted as the name,“ he said.
Dr Emem Omokaro, Director-General, National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC), who expressed commitment to supporting the coalition, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for being elders’ friendly.
Omokaro, represented by Alhaji Mohammed Musa, said that Buhari’s commitment to improving the welfare of older people was evident in his creation of the National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC).
“The mandate of NSCC is to identify the needs of older persons and address them.
“NSCC is to facilitate the repositioning and training as well as the capacity building of senior citizens in the communities senior citizens live,” he said.
Dr Garba Abari, Director-General, National Orientation Agency (NOA) assured the coalition of continued support.
Abari, represented by Dr Ayola Olufemi, a director in the agency, congratulated the coalition on its success in advocating for the improvement of the welfare of senior citizens.
Dr Chioma Ejikeme, Executive Secretary, Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate, (PTAD) acknowledged the good works of the coalition, affirming the Federal Government’s recognition of the coalition.
Ejikeme, represented by Alhaji Sani Mustapha, expressed the determination of PTAD to continue to project the achievement of the coalition.
