Chelsea will keep tabs on Jules Kounde over the coming months in anticipation of a potential move in either January or next summer.

The Blues narrowly missed out on signing the Sevilla defender in the transfer window as they couldn’t get his €80m asking price reduced.

Although a deal slipped from their grasp, they remain very keen on bringing Kounde to Stamford Bridge as he possesses bags of potential aged just 22.

Thomas Tuchel has one eye on the future and with his defensive options looking unsustainable, there is a possibility the transfer saga will spark back into life, as per the Evening Standard.

Tuchel is already a centre-back light after allowing Kurt Zouma to leave and join West Ham for a fee in the region of £30m.

And come the end of the season he could well lose another option in the position as the contract of Thiago Silva, 36, will expire.

Therefore, defensive reinforcement is apparently the next priority after Tuchel was given his number one target of a goalscorer in Romelu Lukaku.

Thomas Tuchel, Manager of Chelsea looks on during the Pre-Season Friendly match between Arsenal and Chelsea at Emirates Stadium on August 01, 2021 in London, England.

Kounde will have just two years left on his contract in Spain by the time next summer rolls around, so should be available for a cheaper price.

Chelsea might be forced into negotiations in January, though, with the France international proving to be a hot commodity.

They certainly have the funds to facilitate this, because although they splashed out £97.5m on Lukaku, they recouped more money from outgoings.
