Saul Niguez has revealed the promise Thomas Tuchel gave to him that ensured he made the Transfer Deadline Day move to Chelsea.
Saul was confirmed as a very late arrival from Atletico Madrid last night, joining the Blues on a season-long loan for a fee of £3.4million.
There’s also an option in the deal to buy the 26-year-old for £30m next summer – despite his release clause standing at £128m.
It’s a tidy piece of business by Chelsea who were vying with Manchester United for his signature.
It appears the Londoners beat their northern counterparts because of a guarantee from Tuchel about where the Spain international would play.
Saul said: “At 11:57 p.m. we finished reviewing the contract and they had to see it there … I was like De Gea. I thought: ‘This is not going to come in and that’s it.’ It had been a long afternoon and night.
“My wife was very nervous, we have had some very complicated days, because this decision is not easy. Leaving my house on a new adventure is complicated.
“I’ll give it a try and see what happens. Give it my all and help Chelsea so that he [Tuchel] can see the Saul I want to show. Not just a versatile player. They promised me that I would play in my position. It was very important.”
The position of preference for the midfielder is in the centre of the park. In the past he has been used on both the right and the left.
But in the middle is where he feels most at home and has played most of his career.
