Dr Olagunsoye Oyinlola, a former governor of Osun, has described former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, as a man with a large heart and great leadership quality.
Babangida, popularly known as IBB who would be 80 years on Aug. 17, was Nigeria`s former military president from Aug. 27, 1985 until his resignation in August 1993.
Oyinlola spoke at the IBB Legacy Dialogue organised to celebrate the former president on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
He said it was a privilege for him to have mediated between a former president and Babangida, saying that “ I thank God that they both allowed me to mediate in that issue.
“The greatest trying period for me in my life in my relationship with them, was when there was a conflict between them and it went to the pages of the newspapers.
“And one calling the other a full at 70, is a full forever, honestly I was close to tears. I want to thank God that the two of them allowed me to mediate and settle them,’’ Oyinlola said.
He added that Babangida brought consultative process even in the military while in government and came up with laudable policies and programmes to enhance the lives of Nigerians.
Others who spoke, said there was need for political leaders to emulate Babangida`s intellectual and leadership style and his detribalised nature.
They noted that the former military president while in office, had great empathy that differentiated him from other political leaders.
They further noted that while in power, Babangida exhibited great intellect with which he was able to diagnose most of the country`s problem and came up with solutions.
They said though most of his policies were opposed by the people, he meant well for the country.
