Former President Donald Trump wants his supporters to carry plastic “Trump Cards” to demonstrate their support for him, but critics have noted how one of the designs bears a resemblance to Nazi insignia.
Trump’s PAC sent two emails on Wednesday asking supports to choose between four red-and-gold cards, Insider’s Cheryl Teh reported.
One of the designs, which features a gold eagle, is “reminiscent of the Nazi Parteiadler, or party eagle,” The Times said.
The Trump card features a bald eagle, the national bird of the United States, looking to its right.
“The Great Seal of America ” features a left-facing eagle, whereas the Nazi-era Reichsadler , or Imperial Eagle, is represented by an eagle look over its right shoulder.
“One thing to note is Trump’s fascist party eagle faces opposite the American Eagle which faces away from the arrows in her left talons and towards the olive branches symbolizing peace,” tweeted Steve Schmidt, an American public affairs strategist who worked on the campaigns of President George W. Bush and the late Senator John McCain, to his 1.4 million followers.
Jenna Ellis, the author of “The List: A Week-by-Week Reckoning of Trump’s First Year,” also noted the similarities to her 514,000 Twitter followers.
According to a fundraising email by the former president’s PAC, the cards were signed off by Trump. “We recently met with the President in his Florida office and showed him four designs,” the email said. “Originally we were planning on releasing just one design, but when President Trump saw the cards on his desk, he said, ‘These are BEAUTIFUL. We should let the American People decide – they ALWAYS know best!'”
One of the four designs sent to supporters incorrectly spelled “official” as “offical,” Insider’s Grace Panetta reported.
This is not the first time a product from Trump’s campaign website has come under fire because of its perceived similarities to a Nazi symbol.
In July 2020, Forward noted that an America First t-shirt for sale on the Trump Make America Great Again Committee website looked similar to a Nazi eagle.
