Abuja court

An FCT Upper Area Court in Zuba, on Thursday, ordered that one Suleiman Isa should be given 12 lashes of the cane for stealing 14 pieces of iron frames from Dantata Estate in Gwarinpa district of Abuja.Isa, 21, was arraigned for trespassing and theft at the construction site.he judge, Mr. Gambo Garba, warned him to desist from crime.Garba imposed the punishment following admission of guilt by the convict, who, however, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy and promised to be of good behaviour. He claimed that his action resulted from poverty and economic hardship. News reports that the prosecutor, Chinedu Ogada, had earlier told the Abuja court that guards on duty arrested the man while trying to escape with the steel frames valued at N98,000.Ogada said the convict went into Plot 645 situated in the estate and stole the 14 pieces of frames.“During police investigation the convict made a confessional statement and the 14 pieces of stolen iron frame have been recovered from him.”He said the offence contravened the provisions of section 288 of the Penal Code.Earlier, scores of youths in the nation’s capital had mounted a blockade on the ever-busy Abuja-Keffi highway to compel the Federal Capital Territory Administration to quickly evacuate the decomposing body of an unidentified man found under the popular Nyanya bridge. The youths formed a human blockade on the Nyanya stretch of the road; thereby obstructing the free flow of traffic for several hours.  The protesters, who wielded heavy tree branches, expressed frustration over the alleged non-chalance of the authorities to take responsibility for evacuating the decaying corpse from the area. They resisted some security operatives who stormed the area to restore normalcy. However, the circumstances behind the death of the young man was not clear, but it was gathered that under the Nyanya bridge has been a den of criminal fueling speculation that the deceased may have been robbed before being killed.
