Antonio Conte insists “money is not my obsession” after opening up on his reasons for snubbing Tottenham.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy made the former Chelsea boss his number one target after failing to entice Mauricio Pochettino back to White Hart Lane following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

Levy held extensive talks with Conte in the hope of naming the Italian Tottenham’s next boss.

But the two parties were unable to come to an agreement and the deal broke down.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Conte explained why he turned down Spurs and even appeared to aim a dig at a man he has scuffled win a number of times throughout the years, former Tottenham boss Mourinho.

Antonio Conte insists "money is not my obsession"

Conte said: “Money is not my obsession. I look at projects and I’m ready to stay at home if they don’t convince me. I like difficult challenges but if there is something with a club that does not convince me, I prefer to say: no, thank you.”

In an apparent dig at Mourinho, Conte added: “Some people squeeze every last drop out of their players, leaving behind top players that have given absolutely everything and have nothing left in the tank.”
