Report from Gbongan, a very popular town and headquarters of Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State is that open defecation is slowly becoming the norm for some households.
Many houses within the town which is strategically located on the Ibadan-Ife-Akure expressway are without toilet facilities and running water.
According to some complainants, most of the houses in the town have become old and going by their design, toilet facilities are lacking and occupants go to relieve themselves in the surrounding bushes.
Some houses with dilapidated toilets only use them when it is convenient and when conditions don’t warrant its use, it is sealed off temporarily.
Affected occupants revealed that owners of most of the houses are just concerned about their rents while complaints about the toilets falls on deaf ears.
They revealed also that most of the houses are being managed by children who reside in either Lagos or Ibadan and that they don’t care about the maintenance of such houses.
Lamenting the reluctance of the environmental department of the local government in helping them, they maintained that they have on many occasions reached out to the department responsible without any positive action taken.
Also, because of the semi-rural nature of the local government, provision of running water had been a constant cause of concern but most of the sources of water in the town are obtained from wells and boreholes.
Reacting, the Osun State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Sola Oladepo in a telephone chat with DAILY POST stated that from the information at his disposal, the officials of the ministry will be in the town on Wednesday, adding that he had already charged all the Directors of Water, Environment and Sanitation (DWES) in all the local government areas to seal off any house without proper toilet facilities.
While noting the difficulty in tracing such erring houses without accurate information, the commissioner promised to link up with the Council Manager in Ayedaade local government area to do the needful.
According to him, “As the supervising ministry, we will deal with it immediately because if we don’t take such steps, people will continue to see it as normal.
“They may also use the non-availability of a local government executive council in place as an excuse but notwithstanding, the Council Managers always make provisions for the DWES to carry out such important assignments.”
Ifedayo Local Government Area of Osun State has been certified Open Defecation Free (ODF) by UNICEF and validated by the National Task Group on Sanitation (NTGS) on 30th October, 2019.
