According to SPORT, midfielder Ilaix Moriba is set to be promoted to the Barcelona first team from next season. The youngster has enjoyed a wonderful time with the first team, making his debut and brimming with confidence ever since.
Ronald Koeman has shown a lot of faith in the Barcelona B player. So much so, that he almost ‘skipped’ the phase of training and playing with the U-19 squad. The Spaniard made his debut against Cornella in the Copa del Rey, where he had a great showing. Since then he has regularly been in the first team dynamics.
In the wonderful semi-final comeback vs Sevilla, Ronald Koeman brought on Ilaix Moriba as one of the reinforcements in the second half. The youngster was thrust into the fray of a massive game with no margin for error and also had to battle out in extra time, but he did a stellar job.
Moriba will now receive his first team card for all purposes at the beginning of next season. The club have complete faith in his ability. At just 18, he should technically be playing with Sergi Mila’s Juvenil A as most players coming through the academy do, but clearly his ability is far beyond his years.
The midfielder’s current contract is a 3-year deal that runs out in 2022. With the arrival of a new president just around the corner, Moriba’s promotion and contract extension will be key priorities.
He has already shown tremendous signs of promise and has even gotten his first assist for Barcelona earlier in January when he started against Alaves in La Liga. At 16, he reportedly had offers to join Manchester City, Chelsea and Juventus and there will certainly be no lack of suitors in the future.
