Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, at the weekend, visited Billiri town where properties worth millions of naira were allegedly destroyed by some persons protesting against alleged complicity in the selection of the new Mai (traditional ruler) of Tangale in Biliri Local Government area.
During the on-the-spot assessment of damage recorded as a result of the violent protests, Inuwa sympathised with the victims, saying the perpetrators of the mayhem were unpatriotic citizens.
He, however, assured that the “government would intervene to ensure that those who lost their property were supported,” promising that perpetrators of the wanton destruction and their sponsors would be fished out to face the wrath of the law.
“The government is still on the selection process of appointing a new Mai, but some forces took advantage of the development to cause mayhem just to achieve their personal goals, resulting in loss of lives and property. We condemn the criminal behaviour and actions committed by those unscrupulous elements and we sympathise with the families of those who lost their lives and property in this unfortunate incident,” he stated.
He added that the 24-hour curfew imposed on the local government area will remain until normalcy is restored.
