The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) said it had begun skill acquisition training for 320 unemployed youths in Ekiti State under its Basic National Open Apprenticeship Scheme.

According to a statement in Ado-Ekiti, the participants were drawn from across the 16 local government areas of the state.

The  Acting-Director-General, Mallam Abubakar Nuhu Afikpo at the orientation , said  the training coverd  GSM repair, shoe and bag making, fashion designing, decoration, events planning, computer and among others.

Afikpo explained that the skill acquisition scheme which was primarily designed to empower youths for self-reliance would address the growing unemployment rate in the country.

The NDE boss, who was represented by Mr. Fakunle Julius, said the mandate of the Directorate was to banish poverty through creation of job opportunities for the unemployed youth.

He noted that vocational skills was now imperative to human survival considering high unemployment rate in the country, appealing to the benefeciaries to make use of the opportunity provided them to create wealth and become employer of labour.

The State Coordinator, Alao Babatunde said the scheme should be seen as a virile tool for wealth creation and poverty alleviation, urging the participants to be appreciative, diligent and creative with the skills to be acquired in order to cope with the existing realities in the societies.

“You are expected to use this opportunity to launch into being entrepreneurs and employers of labour. See yourself in a better light as from today. “

“Don’t joke with these training. They will help you become self-reliant and useful economically. As you are empowered, you stand the chance of equally empowering others. Your future is now. Don’t waste it on frivolities, “he said.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Asubiojo Omolara lauded the Federal Government the initiative, adding that it would help in reducing over dependency of youths on white collar jobs.
