In the early hours of Monday, 11 January 2021, an eighteen (18) year old girl, Esther from Ado Local Government Area of Benue State, burned her boyfriend, Elvis Chidinma Omah from Nsuka Local Government Area of Enugu State, to death in Makurdi, Igbere TV records.
Since Wednesday, 23 December 2020, Chidinma, a patent medicine dealer who just returned from Christmas and New Year’s holiday last Saturday, has been in the village. Trouble began shortly after her friends told Esther that Chidinma was traveling to his village to pay the pride of another girl he intended to marry, an accusation he vehemently denied when Esther challenged him, but she was not satisfied with his response.
As a result, on Sunday evening, Esther went to an unknown filling station with a gallon and filled it with premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, in line with her unspecified intention to burn Chidinma. In the early hours of Sunday, Esther came to his home, stayed with him and pretended as if all was well. They ate food and spent the entire night playing together until they both fell asleep. After 2 a.m., she woke up a few minutes and went straight to where she kept the fuel in front of Chidinma’s place, took it to the room, and poured the fuel right inside the room while Chidinma was still sleeping. She lit the room with matches and instantly ran away. Some minutes later, in an effort to extinguish the fire, some tenants living in the compound came out shouting and pouring water into the room. Chidinma, who was burnt beyond recognition, managed to come out as the inferno subsided, screaming that Esther had killed him, and was immediately rushed to Apir Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi.
Rose Stephen said, while giving details of the tragic event, an eyewitness and a neighbor to the deceased, they perceived the smell and sound of fire around 2 a.m. on Monday, they came out and found that it was the room of Chidinma that was burning. They did all they could, but they were unable to stop the fire from burning him. She further claimed that both of them had problems and were still going to the police station in 2020, adding that Chidinma told Esther that before he travelled for Christmas and New Year, he was fed up with her bad characters and was no longer interested in her. Rose said that she was shocked to see them together shortly after the return of Chidinma from the village from Saturday to Sunday. Corroborating the story, another eyewitness and one of the deceased’s closest friends, Abraham Ebute said, Chidinma specifically told Esther that due to her unruly conduct and criminal inclination, Chidinma was no longer interested in the relationship with her, saying that Chidinma was once arrested because she stole an Air Force officer’s handset and was traced to the house of Chidinma.
Ebute added that, before traveling home, Esther also stole Chidi’s phone and promised to return it to him after his arrival, not realizing her plan was to kill him. He said, along with his other friends, he rushed to Chidinma’s house as smoke went off and cried out from the neighborhoods only to find that he was burnt to an unimaginable amount, to pray to God to accept him in His bosom. The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Benue State Police Command, Catherine Anene, when contacted, confirmed the tragic incident and the culprit’s subsequent capture, Esther, saying that she was in their custody while the investigation is still underway to unravel the ugly situation.
At the time of a visit this morning to his residence, Off Zaki Biam Lane, Wadata Makurdi, Charred remains of mattresses, pillows, cloths and other materials belonging to the deceased were seen littered everywhere in his room. Chidinma was confirmed dead today, Tuesday, January 12, 2021, and his parents, who were already in Makurdi at the time of filing this report, were on the way to convey his corpse to Nsuka.
