The Bundesliga will have to play without fans again after the gradual return of fans was cut short as a result of surging COVID-19 infections in Germany.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and state leaders agreed new restrictions on Wednesday in an attempt to contain the virus, meaning professional soccer matches will have to be played without spectators starting Monday and for the rest of November, with amateur sports halted altogether.

Most Bundesliga games were being played without fans anyway, with a few clubs allowing limited numbers of fans through their gates based on local infection rates. 

“We must act, and now, to avoid an acute national health emergency,” Merkel said
