Two people were dead and several others injured after a suspected terrorist knife attack at a church in Nice.

Mayor Christian Estrosi wrote on Twitter that the attack took place near the southern French city’s Notre Dame church and that police had a suspect in custody.

He said the attack appeared to be a terrorist incident.

Police said two people were confirmed dead.

The attack came after the beheading this month of school teacher Samuel Paty by a man of Chechen origin.

The attacker had said he wanted to punish Paty for showing pupils cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad published in satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

It was not clear what the motive for the Nice attack was, or if it was connected to the cartoons, which Muslims consider to be blasphemous.

Since Paty’s killing, French officials have reasserted the right to display the cartoons, and the images have been shown at marches staged in solidarity with the dead teacher.

That has prompted an outpouring of anger in parts of the Muslim world, with some governments accusing President Emmanuel Macron of pursuing an anti-Islam agenda.
