Netflix has released the first images from Chadwick Boseman’s final movie Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, weeks after the Black Panther star sadly passed away.

Boseman, who died at the age of 43 in August, stars alongside Viola Davis, Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo, and Michael Potts in the drama, playing trumpeter Levee.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, based on August Wilson’s 1982 play of the same name, tells the story of a fateful music recording session in the ’20s, where a band of musicians await the arrival of the legendary ‘Mother of the Blues’ Ma Rainey (Davis).

Directed by George C Wolfe and produced by Denzel Washington, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will premiere on Netflix later this year, launching on the streaming service on December 18.

Struck by the poignancy of Boseman’s final role, Washington said (via The New York Times): “He did a brilliant job, and he’s gone. I still can’t believe it.”

Boseman passed away on August 28 after living with colon cancer for four years. The actor had kept his illness private, with his death coming as a shock to fans across the world.
