Jurgen Klopp has suggested that Fabinho could move into the heart of Liverpool’s defence in the wake of Thiago Alcantara’s arrival.
The Brazilian starred in the Reds’ impressive win at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, partnering Virgil van Dijk in a back four.
Fabinho stepped in with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip both sidelined with injury and took plaudits from his manager following the win.
During Liverpool ’s 7-2 demolition of Lincoln City, Fabinho was given another run out at the back, replacing van Dijk at half time.
And with the arrival of Thiago adding to an already crowded midfield picture, Klopp has hinted his versatility could mean more minutes.
Asked if his positional switch was a long-term answer, the Liverpool boss told Sky Sports: “What do I know? We have to make sure we have centre halves when we play football and Fabinho can obviously play the position very well, he’s fit and that’s good, so he gets minutes, that’s good for him.
“Joe [Gomez] should be back in training tomorrow [Friday], I hope so and the situation could look slightly different. But he is doing really well, if he plays like he played against Chelsea he can play as a centre half, 100%.
“If somebody else plays as a 6, he has another position.”
A much changed Liverpool side ran riot at Sincil Bank, with Curtis Jones impressing, netting a brace.
The midfielder dropped into the defence, keeping Timo Werner at bay in the Reds’ 2-0 win
Following the win, Klopp praised the attitude of his squad, after they set up a last-16 tie with Arsenal next week.
He added: “I think everybody can take something from the game. Lincoln can take something because they stayed in the game and tried to do their stuff, but we were really really goo in a formation we’ve never played together really.
“I like a lot of things, the goals were really nice, the attitude was brilliant and the boys really wanted to play football.”
