Jurgen Klopp has insisted he never intended to start Thiago Alcantara against Chelsea as the new signing was named on the bench for Liverpool.
The Reds completed the £27m transfer of Thiago from Bayern Munich on Friday, and there were some suggestions that he could be ready for a place in the starting line-up against the Blues.
But speaking before kick-off Klopp said the game had come too quickly for Thiago, who is still working on his fitness and tactical understanding following his move.
“No, I didn’t think for a second about starting him today,” Klopp said. “It’s really funny that people could consider that because of the way that Bayern and Liverpool play.
“There might be similar parts but they play with two midfielders and a No.10 and we play most of the time different, so there was no chance (he would start today).”
Klopp also explained the absences of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, who were both left out of the squad altogether through injury.
“Joe is not a real concern, it’s probably only today,” he said. “With Joel it could take a few days longer, it’s a muscle.
“After injuries that’s how it is. You can look perfect in pre-season but now he has a little problem and we have to react.”
Both Liverpool and Chelsea are looking to win their second games of the new season, with the Reds seeing off Leeds 4-3 on the first day of the campaign while Frank Lampard’s Chelsea beat Brighton 3-1 on Monday.
