Liverpool’s opening day win over Leeds United came in unexpected fashion last weekend. A 4-3 sparring battle saw Liverpool emerge as victors, by the virtue of a Mo Salah hat-trick, including two penalties.
Jürgen Klopp will be comforted by the fact that his Liverpool side still managed to win the game, but there will be understandable concerns that the team have yet again conceded three goals at home.
With that in mind, Klopp may be looking to the transfer market which he still has just under a month to operate in before the window closes on October 6.
Jürgen Klopp’s pursuit of Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcântara looks as though it will come to an end in the next few weeks.
talkSPORT report that Liverpool are front-runners to sign the 29-year-old playmaker, and that a bid can be expected “in the final week of the window.”
Liverpool believe midfield is a position they could strengthen in this window and a move for Thiago will likely materialise between now and the end of the window.
“If [Gini] Wijnaldum goes I think Liverpool will accelerate their interest.”
The two clubs are yet to come to an agreement on price, but Liverpool remain hot favourites to acquire the two-time Champions League winner.
Reds need another centre-back, says Crouch
Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch believes the club need additional options at centre-back, following their 4-3 win over Leeds United.
Crouch feels Virgil van Dijk needs adequate competition for his place in the squad, to guard against complacency. This follows Van Dijk’s mistake in the opening day win which gifted Patrick Bamford the opportunity to score an equaliser in the first half.
His partner at the back Joe Gomez did not have a great game either, turned inside out by Jack Harrison for the Whites’ opening goal at Anfield.
Liverpool’s first-team centre-back options were depleted this summer as Dejan Lovren completed a move to Zenit St-Petersburg. That leaves Van Dijk, Gomez and Joel Matip as senior first-team options.
Youngsters Ki-Jana Hoever and Sepp van den Berg – both Dutch youth internationals – are capable of playing at the heart of defence, but Crouch believes a senior figure to challenge Van Dijk is required.
Mbappé set for PSG exit
Paris Saint-Germain and France star Kylian Mbappé is reportedly considering his future at the French club, and is intent on leaving Ligue 1 after just one more season.
The 21-year-old World Cup winner has turned down multiple improved contract offers, according to the Times, fuelling speculation that he sees his future elsewhere.
Mbappé – who speaks English fluently – has previously praised Liverpool’s setup under Jürgen Klopp and, as per the Times, would be interested in a move to England.
With Liverpool’s front three reaching their late 20s and early 30s over the next 12 months, Mbappé will certainly be on Klopp’s radar as a tailor-made replacement for the current attacking trio.
The Reds may face competition from Manchester United who have tailed Jadon Sancho for much of this year. If United prove to be unsuccessful in their pursuit of the England winger, they may turn their focus to the wantaway PSG man.
