Rafael Nadal has heaped praise on Tiger Woods after the American won The Masters for the fifth time in his career on Sunday. The 43-year-old has battled personal problems and persistent injuries over the last 10 years.
Despite his issues, he triumphed ahead of Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka to claim his fifth green jacket at Augusta. It was his first Major win since 2008, and there were fears he would never win another tournament again at one stage.
However, the 15-time Major winner battled back over the last 12 months to claim success and Nadal admitted his latest win made him very emotional. It is amazing. He is probably my favourite sportsman in the world since a long time ago’ Nadal said.
I am a big fan of him. It has been tough years for him and I can’t be more happy about the victory of yesterday. You imagine all the process and the hard work he had to do to be back on a golf course. It is so difficult, all the things that he did.
To finally win a Major especially at Augusta, probably his favourite one means everything for him. I am very very happy. I really know a little bit how hard he has worked to be back. I was very emotional yesterday. What happened during the last year for Tiger is an inspiration for everyone.
He is a good example of passion for the sport, discipline in terms of hard work and love for the game. Being honest, the celebration of yesterday when he was walking with the family is one of the moments that I will not forget.
Woods will look to win his 16th Major at next month’s PGA Championship in New York.
