Pope Francis has confirmed that Lionel Messi is not actually God, despite being very good at football.

In a remarkable interview with La Sexta’s Jordi Evole, the Pontiff was asked if it is sacrilege to suggest that the Barcelona forward is in fact a deity.

The 82-year-old is a big fan of football, supporting Buenos Aires-based side San Lorenzo de Almagro throughout his life, but he has drawn the line at stating the Argentina captain is a divine power.

The Pope stated: ‘In theory, it is sacrilege. You can’t say it and I don’t believe it.

When Evole suggested he did believe Messi was God, Pope Francis replied with a chuckle: I don’t. People can say he is God, just as they may say I adore you, but only God can be worshiped. Those are expressions from people.

This is a God with the ball on the field is a popular way for someone to express themselves. Of course, he is very good, but he isn’t God.

While Messi’s abilities with his feet might be comparable to that of a higher power, it is unlikely that God would be found guilty of tax fraud.
