Belinda Bencic’s remarkable 2019 form continued as she ousted top seed and defending champion Naomi Osaka with ease.
Bencic has not lost a match since January and needed only 65 minutes to dump Japan’s No. 1 out 6-3 6-1. She’s the No. 1 player in the world. She won everything in the past couple of months,’ Bencic said.
I played I think a great match. I’m really happy with myself. I think I served really good. The first set was great for me, and then I just tried to keep it like that. It was a little bit more windy in the second set, but I think tactic-wise, I played very solid.
Elsewhere, Elina Svitolina won the longest WTA match of the season in a tense 7-6 (10-8) 5-7 6-4 win over Australia’s Ash Barty and will take on Marketa Vondrousova after the Czech stunned second seed Simona Halep 6-2 3-6 6-2.
Garbine Muguruza also advanced but faces a stern test in in-form Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu in the last-eight, while Venus Williams and Angelique Kerber will meet in a mouth-watering tie.
