Locals at a Northland beach claim they spotted a large great white shark jumping out of the water near a popular swimming spot.
In a Facebook post uploaded to the Houhora Community Noticeboard, resident John Boag claimed he saw the large shark, believed to be more than 3 metres long, leaping into the air on Tuesday – only 100 metres from the shore.
Mr Boag was sitting on his deck with a friend overlooking the Houhora wharf, which he says is a popular spot for people wanting to jump into the harbour, when he saw the animal, reports NZME.
”I pointed out roughly where it was in the water and blow me, about 10 seconds later we see a kerfuffle in the water it was quite unbelievable,” he said.
He said he had seen a similar shark in the area last summer and believes it had caught a kingfish which are found the area of water.
“We saw a bit of commotion in the water as if it was chasing something then it leapt out about three feet in the air and did a sort of victory roll in triumph.
“I’ve lived here 38 years, and been coming up since I was five, and this is the first time I’ve ever seen anything like that, it was amazing.”
Others replied to Mr Boag’s post reporting they had also seen the shark.
