The Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu weekend emerged the sole governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2019 general elections. This was after a caucus meeting of the party in Umuahia, has adopted the governor and issued communiqué by the Abia state PDP caucus, which was read by the State secretary, Chief Ibe Nwadioha.

The communiqué reads: “The caucus commends the governor for keeping the flag of the state flying as exemplified in the monumental infrastructural development of the state in every area of human endeavour and has therefore passed a vote of confidence on the governor and has urged all party members to go ahead and support him for his second term bid in the governorship seat”.

In the communiqué, the party caucus, said having “reviewed and took stock of its activities for the past two years, which among others include achievements in the governance of the state, party structure, discipline among party leaders, adherence to party constitution, preparation for the forthcoming primaries and subsequent elections and strict adherence to the rule of law, and has therefore resolved as follows: “The caucus commends the party leadership for holding on to the high ideals of the party in the state especially in its unalloyed support to the state government’s implementation of the party manifesto and social contract existing in Abia state.

“The caucus also commended the party for the maintenance of cohesion within the party and discipline among party members. “The caucus also commended the party for adhering strictly to the party guidelines and urged them to go ahead to ensure transparency and rule of law in the forthcoming primaries.

“The caucus unequivocally resolved that the primaries shall be free and fair in keeping with the party guidelines and extant laws and devoid of rancour”. The caucus finally, solicited for the support of party members for the achievement of free and fair primaries and to ensure victory of PDP in the election proper at all levels of the election.

Who is who in the party structure in the state were at the occasion held at the governor’s banquet hall. The State Chairman of the party, Sir Johnson Onuiigbo disclosed to newsmen after the closed door caucus meeting that the body, which is the highest decision making organ of the party met to discuss issues bordering on the progress of the party.
