Unidentified thieves operating in the riverine areas of Delta state have reportedly stolen facilities worth N1.6billion from the collapsed Delta library in Bomadi.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Muhammad Mustafa, said, “unidentified thieves have stolen facilities worth N1.6billion at the collapsed Delta library in Bomadi. We are investigating the incident, no arrest has been made, but we, as security agents, will do our best possible to bring to book the thieves.”

Investigation revealed that the Delta state library building in Bomadi had collapsed in the past two years with its facilities, such as Books, tables, chairs and others allegedly carted away by yet-to-be identified thieves operating in the area.

The dilapidation and subsequent collapse of the library building have unsettled the people of Bomadi, especially students of various schools in the community.

A student of Government College, Bomadi, who pleaded anonymity, said , “I and two of my colleagues were shocked on our visit to the library building to find out that it had collapsed, and the books carted away. The state government seems to be insensitive to this problem, we don’t have a library, we appeal to the state government to come to our aid”.

Expressing concern over the development, the state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Chiedu Ebie said, “the state government is very worried about the theft at the library, and the collapse of the library building. Government is very committed to the development of education, the collapse of the library building is unfortunate. We are doing something to rebuild the library building, Education is very paramount to this administration, and so it will do everything possible to maintain all existing infrastructures in Education.”

Another student, Eniye Ojobokeme appealed to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to heed their cries for help, and rebuild the library, stressing that the reading environment now lacks building, furniture, facilities.

Our correspondent observed that most of the books in the shelves were stolen, while many others not removed were found drenched inside water on the floor of the collapsed library building.
